Quito Zoo - El Zoológico de Guayllabamba
Ecuador
Museums and Zoos
Quito Zoo acts as a home for rescued and donated animals that have been saved from harmful or dangerous living conditions. Ecuador has an incredible biodiversity and the zoo's ethos is that through conservation, research and education it can - and should - be preserved as much as is possible.
The zoo concentrates its efforts in saving the most endangered species. There are many educational programs on offer within the zoo, including interactive displays and even summer camps for the kids. The zoo also promotes educational programs within local communities; current projects include working with the Andean condor and mountain tapir.
If you choose to visit the zoo, the money you pay ($4.50 for adults, less for concessions) will help to cover the costs of this noble and worthy cause, which includes assisting animals still in quarantine that have not yet been put on public display.
Ecuador has a wonderful diversity of flora and fauna, and the animals you can expect to see in Quito Zoo include the world-famous Galapagos tortoise, the spectacled bear and the jaguar. The zoo also offers a day trip from Quito in which you can see more biodiversity in its natural environment.
The zoo offers internships and volunteer opportunities to those interested in helping with animal care as well as public awareness and general marketing.
