The Condor Park is a 30 acre park which is managed by a foundation dedicated to the care and rescue of predatory birds, such as hawks and eagles, vultures, owls, and condors.
This park is unique in many ways. It is located on a hill known to the locals as the 'Pukara Alto', which has been a gathering place since pre-Colonial times. Indeed, ruins remain of an ancient religious temple. The panoramic sights here are amazing; you get stunning views of the Imbabura and Cotacachi volcanoes, San Pablo Lake, and the towns of Otavalo and Cotacachi.
Large cages are distributed along a cobblestone walk through the park, allowing you to admire a variety of birds such as the barred hawk, the king vulture, the greater red-headed vulture, the spectacled owl, the arctic owl, the mottled owl, and many more. Finally, you will reach the large cage of the impressive Andean condor (vultur gryphus), which is endangered yet easily bred in captivity.
Those birds that cannot be released become the stars of an educational bird show held twice a day (at 11:30am and 4:30pm). The show gives visitors the opportunity to observe these beautiful creatures in flight, and it gives the park the opportunity to inform visitors about the importance of environmental conservation.
Admission fee: $3.50 for adults, $1.75 for children and senior citizens.
