Museo Interactivo de Ciencias
Ecuador
Museums and Zoos
The primary ethos of this brilliant museum, located in Quito, is to 'learn through play'. Housed in a former textile factory and covering over 4,000 square metres of floor space, Museo Interactivo de Ciencias showcases various fascinating exhibitions. It seeks to make science and technology accessible and comprehensible to all ages and abilities by simplifying complicated information through interactive displays; this is kinaesthetic learning at its best.
The fun nature of this museum experience has the effect of making it a more memorable one, meaning that those all important facts and ideas will stay rooted in the mind for a long time. The MIC seeks to indulge all senses, from sight and sound to touch and smell.
Young children will be especially enchanted by the 'Sala Guaguas', which has been designed for ages eight and under and offers a number of interactive installations overseen by trained guides. Another permanent exhibition is 'La Mente', which is primarily concerned with the workings of the brain.
In addition to all of the above, the museum boasts an impressive viewpoint, an open air theatre, and a forest walking trail on the banks of the Rio Machangara. There is also a special section dedicated to the future of Quito; a space-age cocoon which offers a glance at the capital from a different perspective. This is called 'Plan Equinoccio, Quito hacia el 2005', and details ongoing and future projects in Quito.
The museum charges an entry fee of $3 for adults, $2 for students, and $1 for children or elderly visitors.
