This Mindo museum is home to the largest butterfly exhibition in Ecuador, and is a fantastic place to visit if you're a family, or you just love butterflies. The place houses 25 different species, which flutter around you as you walk through the exhibition.
This splendid display of colourful butterflies is part of the museum's efforts to conserve the insects in the Mindo area. Both getting in contact with and understanding nature is important to Mariposario, and here you will get the chance to interact with the butterflies, as well as learn about their life cycle.
Wandering into the museum is a bit like visiting the Cloud Forest. And it's not just fully developed butterflies you will see. You can observe the whole metamorphic process, from egg to larvae to pupa and finally to winged adult. The pupae are hung up and once a butterfly has emerged it is transferred to the flying area. If you are lucky, you will see this emerging process - it really is quite unforgettable.
All the species displayed are native to the surrounding region of the Mindo Forest Reserve, which is government-protected. You will get to ogle amazing butterflies such as the eye protruding owl, morpho, and sarita, among others.
