Mercado Artesanal de la Mariscal
Ecuador
Craft Stores
This enormous market is not to be missed on a visit to Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. Although its sister market, Otavalo, is more popular, this should not detract from the fact that Mercado Artesanal de la Mariscal is a fantastic shopping experience.
You will find a huge array of things to buy, most of which are traditional Ecuadorian handicrafts - including lots of items made from alpaca wool; blankets, scarves and ponchos. The market also hosts stalls selling wonderful trinkets and souvenirs, such as llama rugs and beautiful - and often very affordable - jewellery. Don't forget to haggle! Negotiating your price is easier at Mercado Artesanal de la Mariscal as there are less vendors, and you can often get things cheaper than at Otavalo.
Hours and hours can be spent browsing the stalls in this market, and the atmosphere only serves to complement the shopping experience. This is the kind of place where you want to get lost. If you are feeling brave, you can even visit one of the body piercing stalls for a really unforgettable piece of memorabilia.
