Description
DAY 1: Quito – Toachi River Canyon – Quilotoa Lagoon – kayak Our journey begins at approximately 8:00 AM at the designated meeting point for this tour. We will head along the Pan-American Highway towards Latacunga, where we can observe some of the majestic volcanoes such as Cotopaxi. Our first stop will be at around 11:00 AM at the Toachi River Canyon. This canyon is about 40 meters (131 ft.) high with a 60-degree slope and is the result of pyroclastic flows from the Quilotoa volcano. The base of the canyon consists of pumice, lapilli, and volcanic bombs, and these flows are estimated to be around 1,800 years old. It is a beautiful site with the Toachi River, the main hydrographic axis of the area, running through its depths. At approximately 12:00, we will arrive at Quilotoa Lagoon, located in the Parish of Zumbahua, Pujilí Canton. It is one of the most beautiful volcanic lakes in the world, known for its emerald green color, which varies due to the minerals dissolved in its waters. Its temperature hovers around 12 degrees Celsius (53,6 F). We will check in at Hostal Runa Wasi, leave our luggage, and enjoy a delicious lunch. At approximately 13:30, we will prepare to descend to the lagoon, which will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. At the lagoon, you will have the opportunity to go kayaking. Afterward, we will ascend back, which will take approximately 2 hours, or you can choose to rent a mule for $12. Afterward, we can rest and in the evening enjoy a delicious dinner.
